The Sympathizer (2024) – [Drama/Spy/Political Satire]
For fans of: The Americans, Catch-22, The Night Manager
Directed by Park Chan-wook and based on Viet Thanh Nguyen’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, this HBO/Max miniseries stars Hoa Xuande as a communist double agent navigating exile in 1970s Los Angeles. Sandra Oh and Robert Downey Jr. co-star in multiple roles, adding layers of satire and menace. The series premiered at Cannes and won Best Limited Series at the Gotham Awards.

Beef (2023) – [Drama/Comedy/Thriller]
For fans of: Barry, Killing Eve, Uncut Gems
Steven Yeun and Ali Wong star in this Netflix series about a road rage incident that spirals into obsession and self-destruction. Created by Lee Sung Jin and produced by A24, the show won multiple Emmys including Best Actor and Best Writing. It’s darkly funny, emotionally raw, and wildly addictive. WYALAN Rating – 4/5

The Yogurt Shop Murders (2025) – [True Crime/Documentary/Cold Case]
For fans of: The Jinx, I’ll Be Gone in the Dark, The Staircase
Directed by Margaret Brown (Descendant), this four-part HBO docuseries revisits the 1991 Austin yogurt shop killings, one of Texas’s most haunting unsolved crimes. The series explores the trauma left behind, the overturned convictions, and the lingering questions. Executive produced by Emma Stone and Dave McCary, it premiered in August 2025 to strong reviews.

Sunny (2024) – [Sci-Fi/Drama/Dark Comedy]
For fans of: Severance, Her, Station Eleven
Rashida Jones stars in this Apple TV+ series as a woman in Kyoto who receives a domestic robot after her husband and son disappear. Created by Katie Robbins and based on a story by Colin O’Sullivan, the show blends grief, mystery, and tech satire. The tone is melancholic, the visuals striking. WYALAN Rating – 3/5

Created by and starring Benito Skinner, this Prime Video series follows a queer influencer navigating fame, family, and self-delusion. Mary Beth Barone, Wally Baram, and Adam DiMarco co-star in a world of curated chaos. The humour is sharp, the cringe intentional.

#1 Happy Family USA (2024) – [Comedy/Family/Social Satire]
For fans of: Superstore, Black-ish, The Mindy Project
Michelle Buteau stars in this Netflix sitcom she co-created with Danielle Sanchez-Witzel, playing a matriarch juggling ambition, parenting, and generational chaos. The show blends heart and humour with cultural specificity. Early reviews praised its warmth and wit.

Mo (2022) – [Comedy/Drama/Immigration]
For fans of: Ramy, Atlanta, Master of None
Mohammed Amer stars as a Palestinian refugee navigating life in Houston in this Netflix series co-created with Ramy Youssef. The show blends humour, heartbreak, and cultural specificity with ease. It won a Peabody Award and was praised for its authenticity.
