22 Best Comedies On Apple TV+ For Laughs, Ranked (Trailers)

Apple TV+ is my favourite streaming platform. While it may not have as many movies and TV shows as Netflix, Disney+ or Amazon Prime, the quality is far superior in my opinion. More specifically, it’s also home to some of the best comedies released in the last five years (comedies are my favourite genre of film and tv).

I’ve watched 20+ on Apple TV+. I’ve ranked the comedies in order of how much I laughed, but the star ratings are based on the WYALAN rating for the show as a whole (for example, Little America isn’t hugely comedic and appears low in the list, but I highly recommend it and would watch it again.

WYALAN star rating explained:

  • 5 stars – Highly enjoyed and would highly recommend as a must watch
  • 4 stars – Enjoyed and would watch again in the future
  • 3 stars – Glad I watched it once, but I’ll probably never watch it again
  • 2 stars – Watched to the end, but I wouldn’t watch it again
  • 1 star – DNF (did not finish)

1. The Studio

WYALAN Rating: 5/5

Created by: Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg (Superbad, Pineapple Express) and Peter Huyck and Alex Gregory (Veep and The Larry Sanders Show)

Stars: Seth Rogen (Superbad, Knocked Up), Catherine O’Hara (Schitt’s Creek, Home Alone), Ike Barinholtz (The Mindy Project, Neighbors), Chase Sui Wonders (Bodies Bodies Bodies, Generation), Kathryn Hahn (WandaVision, Transparent)

Seth Rogan leads yet another incredible comedy on Apple TV+. I think The Studio is one of the best comedies in the last five years.

As a newly appointed head of a movie studio, Matt Remick faces the challenge of balancing artistic vision with box office success, all while navigating a maze of egotistical directors, eccentric actors, and meddlesome marketing teams. Each episode deals with a new challenge, from absurd budget disputes to last-minute script rewrites. It doesn’t help that he’s slightly bumbling amongst people. There were plenty of scenes which made me cringe with second hand embarrassment.

Ike Barinholtz is also perfect as a producer and plays his usual loud and erratic character. There are a ton of cameo appearances too, including Martin Scorsese, Ron Howard, Zac Efron, Charlize Theron, Greta Lee, Steve Buscemi, and Olivia Wilde to name just a few.

The one shot takes are incredible (I recommend watching the behind the scenes clips of how they filmed some of the scenes) and unique for a comedy.

The Studio is a sharp, satirical look at Hollywood and how movies are made. Or maybe there is a lot of truth to it. If you love Studio 60 On The Sunset Strip like me, you’ll probably enjoy The Studio.

2. Platonic

WYALAN Rating: 5/5

Created by: Francesca Delbanco (Friends from College), Nicholas Stoller (Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Get Him to the Greek)

Stars: Rose Byrne (Bridesmaids, Physical), Seth Rogen (This Is the End, Pineapple Express), Luke Macfarlane (Bros, Killjoys), Tre Hale (Love and Monsters, Perry Mason), Carla Gallo (Bones, Carnivàle)

Before The Studio, there was Platonic. Ted Lasso had been my number one comedy on Apple TV for a couple of years and I didn’t think anything would knock it off the top spot, but here we are.

Platonic follows two old friends who reconnect after falling out whilst trying to cope with their midlife crisis. Rose Byrne plays Sylvia, a stay-at-home mom of three who is grappling with the monotony of suburban life whilst Seth Rogan navigates the challenges of single life and trying to maintain his trendy brewery business.

Their reignited friendship becomes a source of solace and excitement, allowing them to escape their respective struggles. They’re also chaotic when together which leads to some incredibly bad ideas. There are plenty of great insults between Byrne and Rogen, plus scenes of silly, physical comedy from the pair too. If you like rom coms, you’ll probably like Platonic.

3. Ted Lasso

WYALAN Rating: 5/5

Created by: Jason Sudeikis (Horrible Bosses), Bill Lawrence (Scrubs, Cougar Town), Brendan Hunt (We’re the Millers), Joe Kelly (Detroiters).

Stars: Jason Sudeikis (We’re the Millers, Horrible Bosses), Hannah Waddingham (Game of Thrones, Sex Education), Brett Goldstein (SuperBob, Doctor Who), Juno Temple (The Offer, Atonement), Jeremy Swift (Downton Abbey, Mary Poppins Returns)

For a long time, Ted Lasso was the most known comedy on Apple TV+. An American college football coach (played by Jason Sudeikis) is unexpectedly hired to manage AFC Richmond, a struggling English Premier League football team. Can he overturn their fortunes with zero football experience? Cue fish out of water comedic scenes.

Don’t worry if you don’t like football. It’s more about the players and back room staff stories off the pitch as well as on. What makes Ted Lasso different from other comedies on this list is the number of heartfelt character storylines of personal growth and mental health, rightfully earning the show multi Emmy awards. Ted Lasso remains one of the best feel good comedies on this list.

I’m calling it. I think Ted Lasso will be considered in the pantheon of best TV comedies along with Arrested Development, 30 Rock and Parks and Recreation (all of which I love). I’m excited that Ted Lasso is coming back for season four. If you like other workplace comedies such as The Office and Scrubs, you’ll probably enjoy Ted Lasso.

4. Shrinking

WYALAN Rating: 5/5

Created by: Bill Lawrence (Scrubs, Ted Lasso), Jason Segel (Forgetting Sarah Marshall, How I Met Your Mother), Brett Goldstein (Ted Lasso).

Stars: Jason Segel (How I Met Your Mother, Forgetting Sarah Marshall), Harrison Ford (Star Wars, Indiana Jones), Jessica Williams (Fantastic Beasts, Booksmart), Christa Miller (Scrubs, Cougar Town), Michael Urie (Ugly Betty, Single All the Way)

Another comedic triumph from Bill Lawrence, although the initial trailer was supremely underwhelming, with the cast jumping into the air one after another. I’m glad they’ve changed their trailer now and that I gave Shrinking a chance anyway.

Jason Segal plays therapist Jimmy, although he could use his own therapist. Overwhelmed by grief, Jimmy must repair his relationship with his teenage daughter, Alice (Lukita Maxwell), who is also dealing with her own grief and growing up.

Okay, that description hasn’t exactly screamed comedy, but similar to Ted Lasso there are several well developed character arcs (Harrison Ford, Jessica Williams, Christa Miller, Michael Urie) which make this a feel good comedy with storylines of healing and compassion.

5. Trying

WYALAN Rating: 5/5

Created by: Andy Wolton

Stars: Esther Smith (Uncle, Cuckoo), Rafe Spall (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, The Big Short), Imelda Staunton (Harry Potter, The Crown), Ophelia Lovibond (Minx, Guardians of the Galaxy), Darren Boyd (Killing Eve, Spy)

I didn’t expect to like Trying as much as I did, reading the description. It’s my most underrated comedy on this list. After four seasons, each is as strong as the last which is no mean feat. It’s also returning for season 5, testament to its cult popularity.

Esther Smith and Rafe Spall star as a couple going through the adoption process and navigating a labyrinth of paperwork, interviews, and personal evaluations. Trying somehow finds a way to add humour to the highs and lows of the process and parenthood as it tests their relationship to the maximum. If you like Catastrophe, you’ll like Trying.

6. Loot

WYALAN Rating: 3.5/5

Created by: Matt Hubbard (30 Rock, Parks and Recreation), Alan Yang (Master of None, Forever).

Stars: Maya Rudolph (Bridesmaids, The Good Place), Michaela Jaé Rodriguez (Pose, Tick, Tick… Boom!), Joel Kim Booster (Fire Island, Sunnyside), Ron Funches (Undateable, Trolls), Stephanie Styles (Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist, Kiss Me, Kate)

Maya Rudolph stars as Molly Wells, a billionaire who finds herself at a crossroads after her marriage falls apart. Following her divorce from a tech mogul, Molly suddenly has an $87 billion fortune and no idea what to do with it. In an attempt to rediscover herself, she turns her attention to a charitable foundation she had long forgotten she founded. Although her insulation from reality and struggles to understand the world outside her privilege doesn’t make her the best person to generate ideas for a charity.

I’ll admit, I wasn’t blown away by the pilot, but I’m glad I stuck with it. The casting is superb and I love the bromance between Joel Kim Booster and Ron Funches. Loot does a stellar job of satirising extreme wealth whilst maintaining empathy for a billionaire who is genuinely trying to make a difference (albeit it clumsily executed).

7. Bad Sisters

WYALAN Rating: 4/5

Created by: Sharon Horgan (Catastrophe, Divorce), Dave Finkel (New Girl, 30 Rock), Brett Baer (New Girl, 30 Rock).

Stars: Sharon Horgan (Catastrophe, Motherland), Anne-Marie Duff (Suffragette, Sex Education), Eva Birthistle (Brooklyn, Amber), Sarah Greene (Dublin Murders, Penny Dreadful), Eve Hewson (The Knick, Behind Her Eyes)

Bad Sisters is a dark comedy involving five sisters – Eva, Grace, Ursula, Bibi, and Becka – who find themselves entangled in a life insurance investigation after the unexpected death of Grace’s abusive husband, John Paul. Who killed him? An insurance agent desperately tries to prove foul play to save his struggling business.

The sisters, played by Sharon Horgan, Anne-Marie Duff, Sarah Greene, Eve Hewson, and Eva Birthistle, bring all the comedic bickering of a real family despite the seriousness of the drama, whilst Claes Bang gives a dastardly performance as John Paul.

Aside from the laughs, Bad Sisters has a really great murder mystery storyline as it’s told in flashbacks. By the last episode, I still haven’t solved it. Bad Sisters won multiple awards, including a Peabody Award and a BAFTA for Best Drama Series.

8. Schmigadoon

WYALAN Rating: 3.5/5

Created by: Cinco Paul (Despicable Me, The Secret Life of Pets), Ken Daurio (Horton Hears a Who!, The Lorax)

Stars: Cecily Strong (Saturday Night Live), Keegan-Michael Key (Key & Peele, The Prom), Kristin Chenoweth (Wicked, Pushing Daisies), Alan Cumming (The Good Wife, Cabaret), Ariana DeBose (West Side Story, Hamilton)

I’ll watch anything Keegan-Michael Key is in.

Melissa (Cecily Strong) and Josh (Keegan-Michael Key), a couple struggling with their relationship who embark on a backpacking trip to rekindle their romance. However, they unexpectedly stumble upon the magical town of Schmigadoon, a place where life operates like a Golden Age musical. The town’s residents burst into song at any given moment, and Melissa and Josh soon realize they cannot leave until they find “true love.”

Full of weird and wonderful supporting characters and great songs, Schmigadoon is a new take on musicals for people who aren’t into musicals.

9. Mythic Quest

WYALAN Rating: 3/5

Created by: Charlie Day (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia), Megan Ganz (Community, Modern Family), Rob McElhenney (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia).

Stars: Rob McElhenney (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia), Charlotte Nicdao (Please Like Me, Thor: Ragnarok), Ashly Burch (Horizon Zero Dawn, Adventure Time), Danny Pudi (Community, DuckTales), Jessie Ennis (Better Call Saul, Life of the Party)

Mythic Quest takes you inside a Fortnite type video games company and its quest to continue making successful sequels. Ian Grimm’s (played by Rob McElhenney), the studio’s eccentric and egotistical creative director, vision for the game often clashes with the practicalities of running a studio. Poppy Li (Charlotte Nicdao), the studio’s lead engineer, often butts heads creatively, whilst David Brittlesbee (David Hornsby), struggles to keep things together as the studio’s hapless executive producer.

It has some similar comedic qualities to It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia in the form of insults, although the characters are far less deplorable with some genuine character growth arcs. After four seasons, Mythic Quest has been cancelled. At least Apple are allowing a reshoot of the final episode so we can tie up the story.

10. Bad Monkey

WYALAN Rating: 3.5/5

Created by: Bill Lawrence (Scrubs, Ted Lasso)

Stars: Vince Vaughn (Wedding Crashers, The Break-Up), Michelle Monaghan (Mission: Impossible III, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang), L. Scott Caldwell (Lost, The Fugitive), Rob Delaney (Catastrophe, Deadpool 2), Meredith Hagner (Search Party, Palm Springs)

Bad Monkey is a dark comedy crime drama and is based on Carl Hiaasen’s 2013 novel of the same name. Andrew Yancy (played by Vince Vaughn), a former Miami police detective who has been demoted to restaurant inspector in the Florida Keys. Yancy’s mundane new job takes an unexpected turn when a tourist discovers a severed arm floating in the ocean. Determined to reclaim his detective status, Yancy embarks on an investigation that leads him into a tangled web of corruption, greed, and environmental destruction spanning Florida and the Bahamas.

Vince Vaughn plays his usual sarcastic and cynical yet charming character. If you like any of his previous films like Dodgeball, you’ll enjoy Bad Monkey.

11. The Big Prize Door

WYALAN Rating: 3/5

Created by: David West Read (Schitt’s Creek, & Juliet).

Stars: Chris O’Dowd (The IT Crowd, Bridesmaids), Gabrielle Dennis (Luke Cage, A Black Lady Sketch Show), Sammy Fourlas (Reboot), Ally Maki (Toy Story 4, Wrecked), Damon Gupton (Whiplash, The Divide)

If a machine told you what your purpose in life was, would you believe it? The small town of Deerfield unexpectedly finds one in a store and the population begin changing their whole life. But where did the machine come from?

The Big Prize Door questions the idea of fate, identity, and the unexpected ways people reevaluate their lives when presented with new possibilities. The show is worth watching for Chris O’Dowd’s dance routine alone.

12. Hello Tomorrow!

WYALAN Rating: 3/5

Created by: Amit Bhalla (Bloodline), Lucas Jansen (The Newsroom)

Stars: Billy Crudup (Almost Famous, The Morning Show), Hank Azaria (The Simpsons, Brockmire), Alison Pill (The Newsroom, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World), Nicholas Podany (Summertime Dropouts, Hart of Dixie), Dewshane Williams (The Umbrella Academy, In the Dark)

Billy Crudup stars as con man Jack Billings selling timeshares on the moon. How far is he willing to go to make money? Things begin to unravel quickly in more ways than one when he meets someone and the stakes rise.

13. High Desert

WYALAN Rating: 3/5

Created by: Nancy Fichman (Nurse Jackie), Katie Ford (Miss Congeniality), Jennifer Hoppe-House (Grace and Frankie).

Stars: Patricia Arquette (Boyhood, Escape at Dannemora), Matt Dillon (Crash, There’s Something About Mary), Rupert Friend (Homeland, The Young Victoria), Brad Garrett (Everybody Loves Raymond, Baskets), Weruche Opia (I May Destroy You, Sliced)

A former addict grapples with the loss of her beloved mother, Peggy Newman (Patricia Arquette) decides to make a fresh start by pursuing an unconventional career as a private investigator. Arquette plays the offbeat, oddball and flawed Peggy well which makes you root through all of her demons and challenges.

14. Strange Planet

WYALAN Rating: 3.5/5

Created by: Dan Harmon (Community, Rick and Morty), Nathan W. Pyle (Strange Planet webcomic, NYC Basic Tips and Etiquette).

Stars: Tunde Adebimpe (Rachel Getting Married, Spider-Man: Homecoming), Demi Adejuyigbe (The Amber Ruffin Show), Lori Tan Chinn (Awkwafina Is Nora from Queens, Orange Is the New Black), Danny Pudi (Community, DuckTales), Hannah Einbinder (Hacks, North Hollywood)

Strange Planet is a fun look at the nice parts of everyday human interactions through the eyes of blue life forms who have developed human feelings.

Each episode of Strange Planet is a self-contained story, featuring characters who navigate situations that mirror human experiences but with a delightful twist. From exploring the concept of love and friendship to grappling with fears and insecurities, they communicate in a precise and literal manner. It makes you question why we do things and the way we do them.

Strange Planet feels like the nice, heartwarming moments of Dan Harmon’s creations like Community and Rick and Morty. If you like any of his previous shows or are just looking for a gentle comedy to watch, you’ll like Strange Planet.

15. The After Party

WYALAN Rating: 3/5

Created by: Christopher Miller (The Lego Movie, 21 Jump Street).

Stars: Tiffany Haddish (Girls Trip, The Last O.G.), Sam Richardson (Veep, The Tomorrow War), Zoë Chao (Love Life, The High Note), Ike Barinholtz (The Mindy Project, Blockers), Ben Schwartz (Parks and Recreation, Space Force)

Murder mysteries are all the rage currently. The After Party boasts an all star cast so it was a little surprising this was only okay. At a high school reunion afterparty, a shocking murder occurs. Unconventional Detective Danner, played by Tiffany Haddish, is tasked with unraveling the mystery.

Each episode is told from the perspective of a different character, offering their version of the events leading up to the crime. It was cancelled after two seasons. In my opinion, there were too many episodes (I particularly felt this in season 2). I think other comedy detective series like Only Murders In The Building do a better job of the genre. The After Party just made the recommendation list.

16. Little America

WYALAN Rating: 5/5

Created by: Lee Eisenberg (The Office, Good Boys), Emily V. Gordon (The Big Sick), Kumail Nanjiani (The Big Sick, Silicon Valley).

Stars: Suraj Sharma (Life of Pi, Homeland), Jearnest Corchado (Sneakerheads, The Blacklist), Shaun Toub (Iron Man, Crash), Conphidance (Complications, Greenleaf), Mélanie Laurent (Inglourious Basterds, 6 Underground)

Little America was a surprising wild card when drawing up my list of best comedies on Apple TV+. It isn’t all laughs by any means.

Little America tugs heavily on the heart strings while sprinkling in moments of humour about living as an immigrant in the US. Each episode tells a new cultural story. It’s a celebration of diversity, both the highs and lows. Episodes are directed by filmmakers from immigrant backgrounds so clichés and stereotypes are avoided. Instead, the series feels authentic and enlightening.

If you like stories about personal triumphs against the odds, you’ll love Little America. With everything that is going on politically in the U.S, Little America feels essential. It’s my favourite feel good comedy on Apple TV+.

17. CODA

WYALAN Rating: 4/5

Created by: Sian Heder (Tallulah, Orange Is the New Black)

Stars: Emilia Jones (Locke & Key, Horrible Histories), Troy Kotsur (The Number 23, Flashforward), Marlee Matlin (Children of a Lesser God, The West Wing), Daniel Durant (Switched at Birth, You), Ferdia Walsh-Peelo (Sing Street, Vikings)

Winner of best picture at the 94th Oscars and quite rightly so, CODA is a coming-of-age drama which centres around Ruby (Emilia Jones), a teenager who is the only hearing member of her family. But Ruby’s new found passion for singing starts to have effects on her family responsibilities and the family business – Ruby must find a balance between the two.

I was surprised at how funny CODA was, given the plot. Comedy comes from the unique family dynamic, a no nonsense but passionate music teacher and sibling rivalry.

18. Fingernails

WYALAN Rating: 4/5

Created by: Christos Nikou (Apples).

Stars: Jessie Buckley (Wild Rose, The Lost Daughter), Riz Ahmed (Sound of Metal, The Night Of), Jeremy Allen White (The Bear, Shameless), Luke Wilson (Old School, The Royal Tenenbaums), Annie Murphy (Schitt’s Creek, Kevin Can F**k Himself)

I was surprised to see such low ratings on IMDB (5.9) and Rotten Tomatoes (6.1) for Fingernails. It was also nominated for Best Film at the London Film Festival.

Fingernails sees a new technology which can deduce if your partner is the one via fingernail analysis. If you were already in a relationship, would you still partake in the test? Would you believe the results of the test? Fingernails questions what is love and how do you know if you’re in love.

Anna (Jessie Buckley), a woman who has already passed the test with her longtime boyfriend, Ryan (Jeremy Allen White). Despite their supposed compatibility, Anna begins to question the validity of their relationship. Seeking answers, she secretly takes a job at the Love Institute, an organization dedicated to helping couples strengthen their bonds and improve their chances of passing the test. There, she meets Amir (Riz Ahmed), a fellow instructor who guides couples through various exercises designed to reinforce their love.

It was hilarious seeing the patients have to go through a variety of funny tests and bonding sessions. If Black Mirror did a rom-com, it might look a bit like Fingernails.

19. Slow Horses

WYALAN Rating: 5/5

Created by: Will Smith (The Thick of It, Veep)

Stars: Gary Oldman (Darkest Hour, The Dark Knight), Jack Lowden (Dunkirk, Mary Queen of Scots), Kristin Scott Thomas (The English Patient, Fleabag), Olivia Cooke (House of the Dragon, Thoroughbreds), Jonathan Pryce (The Two Popes, Game of Thrones)

Four seasons and Slow Horses is yet to miss – it’s one of my favourite Apple TV shows overall.

A team made up of MI5 rejects (led by Gary Oldman) are banished after committing career-ending mistakes to mundane, low-stakes assignments, yet somehow find themselves involved in dangerous espionage cases. The misfits hate working with each other so there are a lot of funny, personal insults. In that sense, Slow Horses reminds me of The League (which doesn’t get talked about enough).

20. Severance

WYALAN Rating: 5/5

Created by: Dan Erickson (Severance is his debut project)

Stars: Adam Scott (Parks and Recreation, Big Little Lies), Britt Lower (Casual, Man Seeking Woman), John Turturro (O Brother, Where Art Thou?, The Night Of), Christopher Walken (Catch Me If You Can, The Deer Hunter), Patricia Arquette (Boyhood, Escape at Dannemora)

Lumon Industries, a biotechnology company employs a controversial procedure known as “severance.” This procedure involves implanting a chip in employees’ brains, effectively splitting their consciousness into two distinct identities: the “Innie,” who exists solely at work, and the “Outie,” who lives their personal life outside of work. The two identities are completely unaware of each other, creating a stark divide between the professional and personal realms. While the Outie enjoys freedom from work-related stress, the Innie is confined to the workplace, with no knowledge of the outside world. One employee digs a little deeper into the company.

21. Argylle

WYALAN Rating: 3/5

Created by: Matthew Vaughn (Kingsman: The Secret Service, X-Men: First Class), Jason Fuchs (Wonder Woman, Ice Age: Continental Drift)

Stars: Henry Cavill (Man of Steel, The Witcher), Bryce Dallas Howard (Jurassic World, The Help), Sam Rockwell (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, Moon), Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad, Malcolm in the Middle), Dua Lipa (Barbie, Studio 2054)

Argylle is a spy action-comedy starring Bryce Dallas Howard as Elly Conway, a reclusive author known for her successful spy novels featuring the fearless secret agent Aubrey Argylle (Henry Cavill). Elly’s life takes an unexpected turn when she discovers that the events in her latest book mirror real-world espionage activities. As her fictional creations blur the line between imagination and reality, Elly is drawn into a dangerous game of international intrigue.

22. Spirited

WYALAN Rating: 3/5

Created by: Sean Anders (Daddy’s Home, Instant Family), John Morris (We’re the Millers, Hot Tub Time Machine)

Stars: Will Ferrell (Elf, Anchorman), Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool, Free Guy), Octavia Spencer (The Help, Hidden Figures), Sunita Mani (GLOW, Mr. Robot), Tracy Morgan (30 Rock, The Last O.G.)

Spirited is a modern and musical reimagining of Charles Dickens’ classic novella A Christmas Carol. Ryan Reynolds plays Clint Briggs, a self-centered and manipulative media consultant who thrives on controversy and chaos. Each year, the Ghost of Christmas Present (Will Ferrell) and his team of afterlife spirits select one soul to redeem, hoping to create a ripple effect of goodness in the world. This year, Present chooses Clint, despite warnings that he is “unredeemable.” Instead, Clint turns the tables on Present, forcing him to confront his own past and question his purpose.

Not a bad film by any means, but it doesn’t make my list of Christmas movies I watch every year.

Comedies that just weren’t for me

I watched parts of other Apple TV+ comedies, but I didn’t enjoy them enough to recommend them. But hey, just because they weren’t for me, doesn’t mean you won’t like them. Some still have interesting plots. Here are the trailers for those so you can make your own mind up.
