Flight Of The Conchords

WYALAN Rating: 5/5

Created by: Jemaine Clement (What We Do in the Shadows, Moana), Bret McKenzie (The Muppets, Two Little Boys), and James Bobin (The Muppets, Alice Through the Looking Glass).

Stars: Jemaine Clement (What We Do in the Shadows, Moana), Bret McKenzie (The Muppets, Two Little Boys), Rhys Darby (Hunt for the Wilderpeople, Yes Man), Kristen Schaal (Bob’s Burgers, The Last Man on Earth), and Arj Barker (EuroTrip, The Marijuana-Logues).

Synopsis of Flight of the Conchords:

Flight of the Conchords is a quirky musical comedy series that follows the misadventures of Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement, two struggling musicians from New Zealand who move to New York City in pursuit of fame and fortune. Playing fictionalized versions of themselves, Bret and Jemaine form the folk-comedy duo “Flight of the Conchords” and navigate the challenges of life, love, and their fledgling music career.

The series is structured around their day-to-day lives whilst encountering absurd situations. Their well-meaning but inept band manager, Murray Hewitt (played by Rhys Darby), works at the New Zealand consulate and often provides questionable advice. The duo’s only fan, Mel (Kristen Schaal), is an overly enthusiastic and slightly obsessive groupie who frequently inserts herself into their lives.

Each episode features original songs performed by Bret and Jemaine, seamlessly integrated into the storyline. These musical interludes range from heartfelt ballads to satirical parodies, showcasing the duo’s unique blend of humor and musical talent. The songs often serve as internal monologues or exaggerated depictions of the characters’ emotions and experiences.

The series received critical acclaim for its clever writing, deadpan humor, and innovative use of music. It was nominated for ten Primetime Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Comedy Series and Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for Jemaine Clement. The show also won a Grammy Award for Best Comedy Album in 2008 for their EP The Distant Future. Despite its relatively short run of two seasons, Flight of the Conchords has maintained a devoted fan base and is celebrated as a cult classic.

Tim’s Take: The show is worth watching for the music videos alone. The songs are catchy and strong on their own and it’s fun to try and spot the parodies they are based on (I own both albums on vinyl). The jokes err on the silly side and are a little dry with some of the most quotable are word play. I’ll never tire of rewatching Flight of the Conchords. If you like musical comedies, I recommend reading about The Mighty Boosh further down this list.

Curb Your Enthusiasm

WYALAN Rating: 5/5

Created by: Larry David (Seinfeld, Whatever Works).

Stars: Larry David (Seinfeld, Clear History), Cheryl Hines (Waitress, Suburgatory), Jeff Garlin (The Goldbergs, Toy Story), Susie Essman (Broad City, The King of Queens), and J.B. Smoove (Spider-Man: Far From Home, The Millers).

Synopsis of Curb Your Enthusiasm:

Curb Your Enthusiasm is a groundbreaking comedy series that aired on HBO from 2000 to 2024, spanning 12 seasons. Created by Larry David, the show follows a fictionalized version of David as he navigates the absurdities of everyday life in Los Angeles. The series is known for its improvisational style, with actors working from outlines rather than scripts, allowing for organic and spontaneous humor.

The show revolves around Larry’s interactions with his friends, family, and acquaintances, often leading to hilariously awkward and cringe-worthy situations. Larry’s character is unapologetically blunt and socially inept, which frequently results in misunderstandings and conflicts. His best friend and manager, Jeff Greene (Jeff Garlin), and Jeff’s fiery wife, Susie (Susie Essman), are central figures in Larry’s chaotic world. Cheryl Hines plays Larry’s patient and often exasperated wife, Cheryl, while J.B. Smoove adds comedic flair as Larry’s eccentric housemate, Leon Black.

Curb Your Enthusiasm is celebrated for its unique approach to comedy, blending observational humor with sharp wit and satire. The series often features celebrity guest stars, including Ted Danson, Richard Lewis, and Wanda Sykes, who play exaggerated versions of themselves. The humor is rooted in the minutiae of social interactions, exploring themes like etiquette, relationships, and the quirks of human behavior.

The show has received widespread critical acclaim and numerous accolades, including a Golden Globe Award for Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy in 2002. It has been nominated for 55 Primetime Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Comedy Series for 11 of its 12 seasons. Larry David himself has been nominated multiple times for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, solidifying his status as a comedic genius.

Tim’s Take: Unsurprisingly, Seinfeld and Curb share a lot of similarities. Each episode is like relatable, observational stand up, played out. David’s social interactions will make you cringe. If you like Seinfeld, you’ll probably like Curb Your Enthusiasm. This is a controversial opinion, but I think Curb is better than Seinfeld.

The Office (US)

WYALAN Rating: 5/5

Created by: Greg Daniels (Parks and Recreation, King of the Hill), based on the original British series by Ricky Gervais (Extras, Derek) and Stephen Merchant (Hello Ladies, Fighting with My Family).

Stars: Steve Carell (The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Foxcatcher), Rainn Wilson (Super, The Meg), John Krasinski (A Quiet Place, Jack Ryan), Jenna Fischer (Blades of Glory, The Giant Mechanical Man), and Mindy Kaling (The Mindy Project, Never Have I Ever).

Synopsis of The Office (US):

The Office (US) is a mockumentary-style sitcom that aired on NBC from 2005 to 2013, spanning nine seasons and 201 episodes. Set in the Scranton, Pennsylvania, branch of the fictional Dunder Mifflin Paper Company, the series offers a humorous and often cringe-worthy look at the daily lives of office employees. The show is known for its unique format, blending documentary-style interviews with the characters and a single-camera setup that captures their interactions.

At the heart of the series is Michael Scott (Steve Carell), the bumbling and often inappropriate regional manager whose misguided attempts at leadership provide much of the show’s humor. The ensemble cast includes Dwight Schrute (Rainn Wilson), the eccentric and ambitious assistant to the regional manager; Jim Halpert (John Krasinski), the charming and witty salesman; Pam Beesly (Jenna Fischer), the receptionist with artistic aspirations; and a host of other quirky characters who bring the office to life.

The series explores themes of workplace dynamics, relationships, and personal growth, often highlighting the absurdities of corporate culture. Jim and Pam’s evolving romance serves as a central storyline, while Dwight’s antics and Michael’s misguided efforts to foster camaraderie add layers of comedy and heart.

The Office (US) received widespread critical acclaim and numerous awards during its run. It won five Primetime Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Comedy Series for its second season. Steve Carell earned a Golden Globe Award for his portrayal of Michael Scott, and the show was recognized with a Peabody Award in 2007. The series also garnered multiple Screen Actors Guild Awards and Writers Guild of America Awards.

Tim’s Take: I personally prefer the over the top style of the US version vs the dry humour of the UK. The characters have more extreme personalities. If you like other workplace comedies like Parks and Recreation, you’ll probably like The Office (US). The quality of the series does dip towards the end, markedly when Steve Carell leave the show at the end of series 7.

The Mighty Boosh

WYALAN Rating: 5/5

Created by: Julian Barratt (Nathan Barley, Flowers) and Noel Fielding (The IT Crowd, Luxury Comedy).

Stars: Julian Barratt (Mindhorn, The Great), Noel Fielding (The IT Crowd, Never Mind the Buzzcocks), Michael Fielding (Luxury Comedy, The Mighty Boosh Live), Rich Fulcher (Snuff Box, Drunk History), and Dave Brown (The Mighty Boosh Live, Luxury Comedy).

Synopsis of The Mighty Boosh:

The Mighty Boosh is a surreal British comedy series that aired on BBC Three from 2004 to 2007, spanning three seasons and 20 episodes. The show follows the eccentric adventures of Howard Moon (Julian Barratt) and Vince Noir (Noel Fielding), two aspiring musicians with contrasting personalities. Howard is serious and intellectual, while Vince is flamboyant and carefree. Together, they navigate bizarre and fantastical scenarios in a universe filled with peculiar characters and absurd humor.

The first season is set in the “Zooniverse,” a quirky zoo run by the eccentric Bob Fossil (Rich Fulcher). Howard and Vince work as zookeepers alongside Naboo the Enigma (Michael Fielding), a mystical shaman, and Bollo (Dave Brown), a talking gorilla. The second season shifts to their flat, where they form a band and encounter surreal challenges. The third season takes place in Nabootique, a secondhand shop owned by Naboo, where Howard and Vince continue their escapades.

The series is known for its unique blend of live-action, animation, puppetry, and elaborate musical numbers. It popularized “crimping,” short a cappella songs performed by Howard and Vince, which became a signature element of the show.

The Mighty Boosh received critical acclaim and developed a devoted cult following. It was nominated for several awards, including BAFTA TV Awards for Best New Director (Fiction) and Best Editing – Fiction/Entertainment. The show also won a Royal Television Society Craft & Design Award for Best Costume Design in 2003.

Tim’s Take: The Mighty Boosh remains pretty unique despite being released 20 years ago. The universe they operate is unlike anything you’ll have probably seen. It might be too weird for you, but definitely worth watching to find out. Even if it’s all a little too surreal for you, you’ll be able to appreciate the creativity.

Barry

WYALAN Rating: 4.5/5

Created by: Alec Berg (Silicon Valley, EuroTrip) and Bill Hader (Saturday Night Live, It Chapter Two).

Stars: Bill Hader (Saturday Night Live, It Chapter Two), Stephen Root (Office Space, Get Out), Sarah Goldberg (The Dark Knight Rises, Hindsight), Henry Winkler (Happy Days, Arrested Development), and Anthony Carrigan (Gotham, Noho Hank).

Synopsis of Barry:

Barry is a dark comedy-drama series that aired on HBO from 2018 to 2023, spanning four critically acclaimed seasons. The show follows Barry Berkman (Bill Hader), a former U.S. Marine turned hitman who struggles with loneliness, guilt, and a desire to leave his violent past behind. While on a job in Los Angeles, Barry stumbles into an acting class led by the eccentric Gene Cousineau (Henry Winkler) and discovers a newfound passion for acting. This unexpected pursuit of a creative outlet sets Barry on a tumultuous journey of self-discovery, as he attempts to reconcile his criminal life with his aspirations for a better future.

The series masterfully blends dark humor with intense drama, exploring themes of morality, identity, and redemption. Barry’s interactions with his acting classmates, including aspiring actress Sally Reed (Sarah Goldberg), and his criminal associates, such as Monroe Fuches (Stephen Root) and the quirky NoHo Hank (Anthony Carrigan), create a complex web of relationships that drive the narrative. The show delves into the psychological toll of Barry’s dual life, as he grapples with the consequences of his actions and the impact they have on those around him.

Barry received widespread critical acclaim for its innovative storytelling, sharp writing, and exceptional performances. Bill Hader’s portrayal of the conflicted protagonist earned him two Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series. Henry Winkler also won an Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for his role as Gene Cousineau. The show garnered numerous accolades, including multiple Emmy nominations for Outstanding Comedy Series and recognition for its supporting cast, writing, and directing.

Tim’s Take: One of the better comedy series to have been released in the last 10 years, Barry expertly weaves comedy into a genuine, heartfelt storyline of personal growth. It’s a fresh take on the assassin genre, showing personal responsibility and consciousness of the role. Hader is perfect for the troubled lead, going from a general gloomy persona to frantic shouting.

Flatbush Misdemeanours

WYALAN Rating: 4.5/5

Created by: Kevin Iso (Flatbush Misdemeanours web series) and Dan Perlman (Flatbush Misdemeanours web series).

Stars: Kevin Iso (Flatbush Misdemeanors web series), Dan Perlman (Flatbush Misdemeanors web series), Kristin Dodson (The Good Fight, Random Acts of Flyness), Hassan Johnson (The Wire, Brooklyn’s Finest), and Kareem Green (Flatbush Misdemeanors web series).

Synopsis of Flatbush Misdemeanors:

Flatbush Misdemeanours is a raw and grounded comedy series that aired on Showtime from 2021 to 2022, spanning two seasons and 20 episodes. The show follows Dan (Dan Perlman) and Kevin (Kevin Iso), two longtime friends navigating their lives in the vibrant and challenging environment of Flatbush, Brooklyn. Dan is a public school teacher grappling with depression and a complicated family dynamic, while Kevin is a struggling painter trying to make ends meet. Together, they face the ups and downs of urban life, exploring themes of friendship, identity, and resilience.

The series is based on Iso and Perlman’s 2017 digital web series of the same name, which gained critical acclaim for its authentic portrayal of city life. In the television adaptation, the characters encounter a diverse cast of individuals, including Zayna (Kristin Dodson), a strong-willed high school student; Drew (Hassan Johnson), a protective and bold figure; and Kareem (Kareem Green), Dan’s self-appointed guide to the neighborhood. The show delves into issues like gentrification, racial disparities, and mental health, blending humor with poignant social commentary.

Tim’s Take:

Every day Flatbush Misdemeanours doesn’t get commissioned for a third series is an injustice to society. It’s one of the best comedy series to have been released in the last five years. Special mention for the larger than life comedic roles played by Johnson and Green.

The Office (UK)

WYALAN Rating: 4.5/5

Created by: Ricky Gervais (Extras, After Life) and Stephen Merchant (Hello Ladies, Fighting with My Family).

Stars: Ricky Gervais (Extras, The Invention of Lying), Martin Freeman (The Hobbit, Sherlock), Mackenzie Crook (Pirates of the Caribbean, Detectorists), Lucy Davis (Shaun of the Dead, Wonder Woman), and Ralph Ineson (The Witch, Game of Thrones).

Synopsis of The Office (UK):

The Office (UK) is a groundbreaking mockumentary sitcom that aired on BBC Two from 2001 to 2003, consisting of two six-episode series and a two-part Christmas special. Set in the Slough branch of the fictional Wernham Hogg Paper Company, the series offers a painfully hilarious look at the mundane and often awkward realities of office life. The show is presented as a fly-on-the-wall documentary, capturing the day-to-day interactions of the employees and their eccentric manager, David Brent (Ricky Gervais).

David Brent is a self-absorbed and socially inept boss who believes he is a comedic genius and a beloved leader, though his employees often see him as cringeworthy and out of touch. The series also focuses on Tim Canterbury (Martin Freeman), a likable and witty salesman who is stuck in a job he finds unfulfilling. Tim’s unspoken romantic feelings for receptionist Dawn Tinsley (Lucy Davis), who is engaged to the boorish warehouse worker Lee, form a central emotional arc. Meanwhile, Gareth Keenan (Mackenzie Crook), the officious and oblivious assistant to the regional manager, provides additional comic relief with his bizarre antics and misplaced sense of authority.

The series is celebrated for its sharp writing, subtle humor, and unflinching portrayal of the trivialities and frustrations of office life. It explores themes of social awkwardness, unfulfilled ambitions, and the human desire for connection and recognition. The mockumentary format adds a layer of realism, with characters often breaking the fourth wall to address the camera directly.

The Office (UK) received widespread critical acclaim and numerous accolades, including two Golden Globe Awards for Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy and Best Actor for Ricky Gervais. It also won multiple BAFTA Awards, cementing its status as a cultural phenomenon.

Tim’s Take: Despite the similarities in characters and personalities, the UK and US versions are different enough from each other that it’s worth watching both. The UK version has a dry, British humour grounded in reality of the mundanity of office life and is less over the top than the US version.

Rob & Romesh Vs

WYALAN Rating: 4/5

Created by: Rob Beckett (8 Out of 10 Cats, Live at the Apollo) and Romesh Ranganathan (The Misadventures of Romesh Ranganathan, Asian Provocateur).

Stars: Rob Beckett (8 Out of 10 Cats, Live at the Apollo), Romesh Ranganathan (The Misadventures of Romesh Ranganathan, Asian Provocateur), and various celebrity guests including Usain Bolt (Olympic Gold Medalist), Andy Murray (Wimbledon Champion), and Shania Twain (Grammy Award-Winning Singer).

Synopsis of Rob & Romesh Vs:

Rob & Romesh Vs features comedians and long-time friends Rob Beckett and Romesh Ranganathan as they embark on humorous and often absurd adventures, exploring various worlds of sports, entertainment, and culture. Each episode sees the duo taking on challenges, meeting experts, and immersing themselves in unfamiliar environments and competing in a final challenge.

The series is structured around the pair’s attempts to learn new skills or compete in activities they know little about. From training with NFL stars and sprinting alongside Usain Bolt to performing country music in Nashville and walking the runway in New York City. Their dynamic chemistry and contrasting personalities – Rob’s enthusiastic optimism and Romesh’s dry sarcasm – mean they are absolutely chaotic together as they take jabs at each other’s performance repeatedly.

Rob & Romesh Vs has received critical acclaim and won the Comedy Entertainment award at the 2024 RTS Awards.

Tim’s Take: It might seem odd to include a non sitcom so high up in the list, but it’s testament to Rob and Romesh as a brilliant comedy duo. Their constant ridicule of each other and their bad performances in tasks never gets old despite the format becoming formulaic over six seasons.

Code 404

WYALAN Rating: 3.5/5

Created by: Tom Miller (Tripped, The Aliens), Sam Myer (The Reluctant Landlord), and Daniel Peak (Not Going Out, Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps).

Stars: Stephen Graham (This Is England, The Irishman), Daniel Mays (Line of Duty, Fisherman’s Friends), Rosie Cavaliero (Gentleman Jack, Worzel Gummidge), Anna Maxwell Martin (Motherland, Bleak House), and Amanda Payton (Trial & Error, United States of Al).

Synopsis of Code 404:

Code 404 is a British police procedural comedy-drama that aired on Sky One and Sky Comedy from 2020 to 2022, spanning three seasons. Set in a near-future world, the series follows DI John Major (Daniel Mays) and DI Roy Carver (Stephen Graham), an elite crime-fighting duo in the Metropolitan Police’s Special Investigation Unit. When Major is killed during a botched undercover operation, his body is resurrected as part of an experimental artificial intelligence project. However, the AI-enhanced version of Major is far from perfect, leading to a series of hilarious and chaotic situations.

The show explores Major’s attempts to adjust to his new AI-enhanced existence while grappling with his diminished crime-solving instincts and strained relationships. His partner, Carver, struggles to deal with Major’s erratic behavior and the fallout from his resurrection.

Tim’s Take: With all of the brilliant but serious roles Graham plays, it can be easy to forget how great a comedic actor he is while Mays plays the part of a malfunctioning A.I robot terrifically in this buddy cop series.

Veep

WYALAN Rating: 3.5/5

Created by: Armando Iannucci (The Thick of It, In the Loop).

Stars: Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Seinfeld, The New Adventures of Old Christine), Anna Chlumsky (My Girl, Inventing Anna), Tony Hale (Arrested Development, The Informant!), Reid Scott (My Boys, Venom), and Timothy Simons (Looking for Alaska, Don’t Worry, Darling).

Synopsis of Veep:

Veep is a sharp and satirical political comedy series that aired on HBO from 2012 to 2019, spanning seven seasons. The show follows Selina Meyer (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), a fictional Vice President of the United States, as she navigates the chaotic and often absurd world of American politics. Selina, along with her dysfunctional team of staffers, struggles to leave a meaningful legacy while dealing with the constant challenges of political gamesmanship, public scrutiny, and personal ambition.

The series is known for its biting humor, fast-paced dialogue, and unflinching portrayal of the inner workings of government. Selina’s team includes her loyal but hapless personal aide Gary Walsh (Tony Hale), her ambitious chief of staff Amy Brookheimer (Anna Chlumsky), and her sarcastic communications director Mike McLintock (Matt Walsh). The ensemble cast also features Jonah Ryan (Timothy Simons), an obnoxious and opportunistic White House liaison, and Dan Egan (Reid Scott), a cunning and self-serving political operative.

As the series progresses, Selina’s career takes unexpected turns, including a brief stint as President and her relentless pursuit of power and relevance. The show explores themes of ambition, loyalty, and the often ridiculous nature of political life, delivering a scathing critique of modern politics.

Veep received widespread critical acclaim and numerous accolades during its run. It won 17 Primetime Emmy Awards, including six consecutive wins for Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series. The show also earned multiple awards for its writing, directing, and ensemble cast, solidifying its place as one of the most celebrated political comedies in television history.

Tim’s Take: Ever wondered what the West Wing would be like as a comedy? That would be Veep. The dialogue is fast paced, which usually involves several insults, and the PR disasters will make you cringe over and over again. Similar to The Office UK vs US there are huge similarities between Veep and what is essentially the British version, The Thick Of It. Veep is far more over the top however so it’s still worth watching both series.

The Rehearsal

WYALAN Rating: 4/5

Created by: Nathan Fielder (Nathan for You, The Curse).

Stars: Nathan Fielder (Nathan for You, The Disaster Artist), Angela (The Rehearsal), and various participants and actors who contribute to the show’s unique scenarios.

Synopsis of The Rehearsal:

The Rehearsal is a docu-comedy series that premiered on HBO in 2022. Created, written, directed by, and starring Nathan Fielder, the show explores the lengths to which people might go to prepare for significant life events. Fielder helps participants rehearse pivotal moments in their lives – whether it’s confessing a lie, deciding on parenthood, or navigating a difficult conversation – by constructing elaborate sets and hiring actors to simulate real-life scenarios. These rehearsals aim to account for every possible variable, allowing participants to practice and refine their actions in a controlled environment.

Each episode delves into the participants’ personal struggles, often revealing unexpected emotional depth. The show also examines the ethical implications of Fielder’s methods, as his interventions sometimes blur the line between helping and manipulating.

Tim’s Take: Fielder plays his deadpan character from Nathan For You, except on a larger scale via the research and elaborate set construction, as evidenced by the finale. If you liked Nathan For You, you’ll probably like The Rehearsal.

The Ricky Gervais Show

WYALAN Rating: 4/5

Created by: Ricky Gervais (The Office, Extras), Stephen Merchant (The Office, Hello Ladies), and Karl Pilkington (An Idiot Abroad, Derek).

Stars: Ricky Gervais (The Office, After Life), Stephen Merchant (Extras, Jojo Rabbit), and Karl Pilkington (An Idiot Abroad, The Moaning of Life).

Synopsis of The Ricky Gervais Show:

The Ricky Gervais Show is an animated comedy series that aired on HBO and Channel 4 from 2010 to 2012, spanning three seasons and 39 episodes. The show is based on the popular audio podcasts and audiobooks of the same name, featuring Ricky Gervais, Stephen Merchant, and Karl Pilkington engaging in unscripted and often absurd conversations. These discussions, originally recorded for their XFM radio show and later adapted into podcasts, revolve around a wide range of topics, from philosophical musings to bizarre anecdotes.

The animated series brings these conversations to life with a visual style reminiscent of classic Hanna-Barbera cartoons. The humor largely stems from the dynamic between the three hosts: Gervais’s sharp wit, Merchant’s dry humor, and Pilkington’s unique and often unintentionally hilarious worldview. Pilkington’s offbeat observations and unconventional ideas frequently become the focal point of the show, earning him a cult following.

Each episode features a mix of recurring segments, such as “Monkey News,” where Pilkington shares outlandish stories involving monkeys, and “Karl’s Diary,” which offers a glimpse into his peculiar thoughts and daily life.

The Ricky Gervais Show received critical acclaim for its originality and humor. It was nominated for several awards, including a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Animated Program and an Annie Award for Best Character Design.

Tim’s Take: I loved the original podcast series, but to see it animated brings it to life and on another level. Pilkington’s unique observations and thoughts are ridiculous and the animations match the absurdity. I miss Monkey News.

Silicon Valley

WYALAN Rating: 3.5/5

Created by: Mike Judge (Office Space, King of the Hill), John Altschuler (Blades of Glory, The Goode Family), and Dave Krinsky (Blades of Glory, The Goode Family).

Stars: Thomas Middleditch (Godzilla: King of the Monsters, B Positive), T.J. Miller (Deadpool, Cloverfield), Kumail Nanjiani (The Big Sick, Eternals), Martin Starr (Freaks and Geeks, Spider-Man: Homecoming), and Zach Woods (The Office, Avenue 5).

Synopsis of Silicon Valley:

Silicon Valley is a satirical comedy series that aired on HBO from 2014 to 2019, spanning six seasons and 53 episodes. The show offers a humorous and incisive look at the tech industry, following the journey of Richard Hendricks (Thomas Middleditch), a shy and brilliant programmer who creates a revolutionary data compression algorithm. Richard’s innovation leads to the founding of his startup, Pied Piper, but his path to success is fraught with challenges, including fierce competition, internal conflicts, and the unpredictable nature of the tech world.

The series is set in the heart of Silicon Valley, California, and features a colorful ensemble of characters. Richard’s team includes the arrogant yet loyal Erlich Bachman (T.J. Miller), the cynical systems architect Gilfoyle (Martin Starr), the socially awkward coder Dinesh (Kumail Nanjiani), and the earnest business advisor Jared (Zach Woods). Together, they navigate the cutthroat world of venture capital, corporate espionage, and the absurdities of startup culture.

The show explores themes of ambition, innovation, and the ethical dilemmas faced by those striving for success in a competitive environment. It also highlights the quirks and eccentricities of tech culture, from awkward networking events to over-the-top product launches.

The series received widespread critical acclaim and numerous accolades, including five consecutive Primetime Emmy nominations for Outstanding Comedy Series. It also won two Critics’ Choice Television Awards for Best Comedy Series and earned recognition for its writing, directing, and ensemble cast.

Tim’s Take: A nerdy sitcom that while satirical probably is closer to the truth than is fictional when it comes to the tech industry. Silicon Valley is a true ensemble cast where several of the characters bring much to the table.

Peacemaker

WYALAN Rating: 3.5/5

Created by: James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy, The Suicide Squad).

Stars: John Cena (The Suicide Squad, Trainwreck), Danielle Brooks (Orange Is the New Black, The Color Purple), Freddie Stroma (Bridgerton, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince), Chukwudi Iwuji (The Split, John Wick: Chapter 4), Jennifer Holland (Brightburn, American Pie Presents: The Book of Love), and Steve Agee (Superstore, New Girl).

Synopsis of Peacemaker:

Peacemaker is a superhero action-comedy series that premiered on HBO Max in January 2022. Created by James Gunn, the show serves as a spin-off from the 2021 film The Suicide Squad and follows the titular character, Christopher Smith, aka Peacemaker (John Cena). Set after the events of the film, the series delves into Peacemaker’s journey as he grapples with his violent past and attempts to redefine his mission for peace—often through morally questionable methods.

Peacemaker is recruited by a covert team led by Clemson Murn (Chukwudi Iwuji) for “Project Butterfly,” a mission to eliminate alien parasites threatening humanity. The team includes Leota Adebayo (Danielle Brooks), Emilia Harcourt (Jennifer Holland), John Economos (Steve Agee), and Vigilante (Freddie Stroma), each bringing their own quirks and dynamics to the group. The series explores themes of redemption, family, and identity, while blending Gunn’s signature humor with heartfelt moments.

It features standout elements like Peacemaker’s pet eagle, Eagly, and an iconic opening dance sequence set to Wig Wam’s “Do Ya Wanna Taste It.” The series also delves into Peacemaker’s strained relationship with his father, Auggie Smith (Robert Patrick), who harbors dark secrets.

John Cena’s portrayal of the flawed yet endearing antihero earned praise, and the show was nominated for several awards, including a Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Award for stunt coordination. Its success led to the announcement of a second season, further integrating the series into Gunn’s reimagined DC Universe.

Tim’s Take: Peacemaker is a great example of a spin off being far superior from the original (Suicide Squad). Peacemaker is perfect for people who aren’t into traditional superhero movies from Marvel. It’s closer to Deadpool in that respect (but less annoying and one note) together with the humour of Guardians of the Galaxy. It’s less about saving people or the world and more about  Peacemaker’s journey of growth. Cena adds to the growing pile of former wrestlers like Dwyane Johnson and Dave Baptista who are great comedic actors too (not just physical comedy either). The show is worth watching for the opening dance sequence alone.

Key & Peele

WYALAN Rating: 4/5

Created by: Keegan-Michael Key (Mad TV, The Bubble) and Jordan Peele (Get Out, Nope).

Stars: Keegan-Michael Key (Mad TV, Toy Story 4), Jordan Peele (Get Out, Us), and various guest stars including Ty Burrell (Modern Family, The Incredible Hulk), Rashida Jones (Parks and Recreation, The Office), and Malcolm Barrett (Timeless, Better Off Ted).

Synopsis of Key & Peele:

The show features Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele as they perform a variety of pre-taped comedic sketches, often addressing societal topics such as race relations, pop culture, and social awkwardness. The sketches range from absurd and surreal to sharp and satirical, showcasing the duo’s versatility and comedic brilliance.

The series is known for its innovative format, blending live-action segments with animated and musical elements. Each episode includes studio segments where Key and Peele introduce sketches to a live audience, adding context and humor to the proceedings. Memorable sketches include “Substitute Teacher,” “East/West College Bowl,” and “Obama’s Anger Translator,” which became cultural phenomena and solidified the show’s impact on comedy.

Key & Peele received widespread critical acclaim and numerous accolades during its run. It won two Primetime Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Variety Sketch Series in 2016, and a Peabody Award for its groundbreaking approach to comedy. The show was also nominated for multiple NAACP Image Awards and Writers Guild of America Awards, highlighting its cultural significance and sharp writing.

Tim’s Take: Sketches from Key & Peele have been memed and giffed more times than you’ll realise. It’s truly woven into society, showing its universal appeal.

An Idiot Abroad

WYALAN Rating: 4/5

Created by: Ricky Gervais (The Office, Extras), Stephen Merchant (The Office, Hello Ladies), and Karl Pilkington (The Moaning of Life, Sick of It).

Stars: Karl Pilkington (The Moaning of Life, Derek), Ricky Gervais (Extras, After Life), Stephen Merchant (Jojo Rabbit, Fighting with My Family), and Warwick Davis (Life’s Too Short, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone).

Synopsis of An Idiot Abroad:

An Idiot Abroad is a British travel documentary comedy series that aired on Sky One from 2010 to 2012, spanning three seasons and 20 episodes. The show follows Karl Pilkington, a self-proclaimed homebody with little interest in global travel, as he is sent on international adventures by his friends Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant. The premise revolves around Karl’s reactions to cultural differences and his often hilariously blunt observations about the world.

In the first season, Karl visits the New Seven Wonders of the World, including the Great Wall of China and the Taj Mahal, while dealing with unexpected challenges and tasks assigned by Gervais and Merchant. The second season focuses on Karl completing a “bucket list” of activities, such as swimming with dolphins and climbing Mount Fuji. The third season, subtitled The Short Way Round, sees Karl accompanied by Warwick Davis on a journey inspired by Marco Polo’s travels.
