Best Disney+ Comedies For Adults

I think Disney+ is underrated and is better than Netflix. Aside from the huge collection of Disney and Pixar films, there are a ton of legendary films for adults on Hotstar. In fact, some of my favourite comedy series and movies of all time can be found on Disney+.

I’ve gathered all the comedy movies and series I recommend. I’ve ranked the comedies in order of how much I laughed, but the star ratings are based on the WYALAN rating for the show or movie as a whole. For example, 500 Days of Summer isn’t a movie with laughs per minute so it appears low on the list, but it remains one of my favourite rom-coms of all time and has a 5/5 rating.

WYALAN star rating explained:

  • 5 stars – Highly enjoyed and would highly recommend as a must watch
  • 4 stars – Enjoyed and would watch again in the future
  • 3 stars – Glad I watched it once, but I’ll probably never watch it again
  • 2 stars – Watched to the end, but I wouldn’t watch it again
  • 1 star – DNF (did not finish)

Arrested Development

Tagline: When the money disappears and the dysfunction kicks in, one eccentric family proves that rock bottom is just the beginning.
For Fans of: The Office, Parks and Recreation, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Community, 30 Rock
WYALAN Rating: 5/5

What happens when a wealthy, dysfunctional family loses everything? Narrated by Ron Howard, this mockumentary sitcom follows the Bluth family as they navigate their spectacular fall from grace, with one catch: the one sane son, Michael (Jason Bateman), has to keep them all from destroying themselves. The show is packed with running gags and intricate callbacks that reward repeat viewings. Regarded as one of the smartest comedies of all time, it took home the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Comedy Series and a Golden Globe for Bateman. It’s a must-watch for anyone who enjoys witty, multi-layered humour.

Tim’s Take: One of my favourite comedy series of all time, I will never get bored rewatching. You need to watch Arrested Development at least a few times as there are so many easter eggs you’ll have missed watching the first time. It’s probably still the show I quote the most, despite the first season having been released two decades ago.

The IT Crowd

Tagline: Deep in the basement of a corporate tower, three socially awkward techies battle clueless bosses, broken servers, and their own inability to function in daylight.
For Fans of: Peep Show, Black Books, Silicon Valley, The Office (UK), Spaced
WYALAN Rating: 5/5

Take a trip down to the bleakest basement in London and meet Roy and Moss, two socially awkward tech nerds who have no idea how to interact with the outside world. This British sitcom, created by Graham Linehan, finds its genius in its simple premise: put the nerds in absurd, high-concept situations and watch the chaos unfold. With iconic lines like “Hello, IT… have you tried turning it off and on again?”, it’s a brilliant satire of the digital age. Richard Ayoade won a BAFTA for his performance as the hilariously eccentric Moss.

Tim’s Take: The description of an awkward IT department may not scream laughter, but similar to Father Ted in that respect the unlikely absurd situations the characters find themselves in do a lot of the heavy lifting matched with the phenomenal physical comedy of O’Dowd, Ayoade and Parkinson. If you also enjoyed the absurdity of Garth Marenghi’s Dark Place, you’ll probably enjoy The IT Crowd too.

Scrubs

Tagline: Medicine is messy, friendship is complicated, and growing up means learning to laugh through the pain – even in a hospital.
For Fans of: Parks and Recreation, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Community, The Good Place, Ted Lasso
WYALAN Rating: 5/5

Meet J.D., a young doctor with a wild imagination whose daydreams offer a surreal escape from the pressures of Sacred Heart Hospital. Created by Bill Lawrence, this series follows J.D. (Zach Braff) and his best friend Turk (Donald Faison) as they navigate the professional and personal highs and lows of being a doctor. Its unique style blends surreal fantasy sequences with rapid-fire banter and moments of surprising emotional depth. It’s a show that will make you laugh one moment and leave you with a lump in your throat the next, and it earned multiple Golden Globe nominations for lead actor Zach Braff.

Tim’s Take: While the series may have ran a little too long, the first few seasons are still a must watch. Full of weird and wonderful characters, Scrubs remains a great definition for ensemble cast.

My Cousin Vinny

Tagline: Two New Yorkers. One murder trial. And a lawyer who’s never won a case—but might just win your heart with his courtroom chaos.
For Fans of: Planes, Trains and Automobiles, Liar Liar, The Birdcage, City Slickers, Find Me Guilty
WYALAN Rating: 5/5

Two New York college students are arrested for a murder they didn’t commit in rural Alabama, and their only hope is one hell of a long shot: their cousin Vinny, a newly minted lawyer who just passed the bar on his sixth try. This classic courtroom comedy is an absolute masterclass in banter, from Joe Pesci’s fiery New Yorker persona to Marisa Tomei’s Oscar-winning role as his quick-witted fiancée. It’s a perfect fish-out-of-water story that will have you quoting lines for years.

Tim’s Take: A movie my brother had on VHS tape and thought it was funny then and still is as an adult (the what are you wearing scene will never not make me laugh and something I still quote to this day). Joe Pesci is brilliant as his usual biting, sarcastic self. The plot itself is great as it seems like there is no way out for the defendants and you’re left guessing if Vinny can win the case.

Spy

Tagline: She’s a desk-bound analyst turned field agent, navigating espionage, explosions, and designer heels with deadly precision and zero chill.
For Fans of: The Heat, Central Intelligence, Kingsman: The Secret Service, Tropic Thunder, Johnny English
WYALAN Rating: 5/5

What do you get when you put a CIA analyst (Melissa McCarthy), a pompous superspy (Jude Law), and a hilariously incompetent secret agent (Jason Statham) in the same movie? An action-comedy masterpiece. Directed by Paul Feig (who also helmed Bridesmaids and The Heat), this film is a high-octane spoof that follows a desk-bound agent as she goes undercover to track down a deadly arms dealer. The film is a perfect showcase for McCarthy’s physical comedy and a rare opportunity to see Statham utterly lampoon his tough-guy persona. It was nominated for two Golden Globe Awards, including Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy.

Tim’s Take: Spy is one of the best comedies to have been released in the last 10 years. It’s incredibly silly and reminds me of the humour and gags in Zoolander or Anchorman. There are many James Bond spoofs and parodies, I think Spy is one of the best. In general, Melissa McCarthy in a lead comedic role is always worth a watch I think. Spy is worth watching for Jason Statham’s cameo alone. We need a spin off and he should have more comedic lead roles based on his performance in Spy.

Stuber

Tagline: A mild-mannered Uber driver gets hijacked into a wild night of shootouts, stakeouts, and one very aggressive cop with no sense of boundaries.
For Fans of: The Other Guys, 21 Jump Street, The Nice Guys, Central Intelligence, Ride Along
WYALAN Rating: 4/5

When a mild-mannered Uber driver picks up a hard-boiled cop, they’re thrown into a violent night of crime-fighting and explosive one-liners. This buddy-cop action-comedy pairs Kumail Nanjiani and Dave Bautista in a hilarious mismatch made in hell (or, you know, Los Angeles). From director Michael Dowse (Fubar, Goon), this movie is a ridiculous joyride that never takes itself too seriously.

Tim’s Take: Kumail Nanjiani rarely misses (I implore you to watch The Big Sick) and Stuber is up there with one of his best comedy movies I think.

Peep Show

Tagline: Two flatmates, one disastrous life. Welcome to the inner monologue of men who should never be left unsupervised.
For Fans of: The IT Crowd, Fresh Meat, Fleabag, Man Down, This Country
WYALAN Rating: 5/5

Enter the minds of two of the most socially dysfunctional flatmates in British history: neurotic Mark and lazy-but-delusional Jeremy. Told entirely from their point of view with inner monologues, this painfully awkward and incredibly clever sitcom is a cringe-comedy goldmine. From the minds of Jesse Armstrong (creator of Succession) and Sam Bain, the series is a masterclass in revealing the dark, petty, and deeply insecure thoughts we all have.

Tim’s Take: Before Succession, Jesse Armstrong created Peep Show. Two very different shows, but similar jokes ties them together.

English Teacher

Tagline: High school’s a minefield—and Evan’s just trying to teach Shakespeare without losing his mind.
For Fans of: Abbott Elementary, The Office, Parks and Recreation, Schitt’s Creek, Nathan For You
WYALAN Rating: 4/5

Meet Evan Marquez, a high school English teacher who’s a well-meaning liberal idealist fighting a never-ending culture war in the classroom. This series, from creator Brian Jordan Alvarez (known for his viral web series The Gay and Wondrous Life of Caleb Gallo), finds comedy in Evan’s noble but often misguided battles with both his students and the school’s administration. Watch him try to teach a student about morality with a disastrous Crime and Punishment essay, or get in trouble for a kiss in the parking lot. The show has been recognized with nominations for the Critics’ Choice Television Awards for Best Comedy Series and Best Actor in a Comedy Series for Alvarez.

Tim’s Take: One of the better comedy series to have been released in the last couple of years, I see English Teacher as Abbott Elementary’s bigger brother.

10 Things I Hate About You

Tagline: She’s fierce, he’s charming, and high school is a battlefield of sarcasm, schemes, and unexpected romance.
For Fans of: Easy A, Mean Girls, Clueless, She’s the Man, Booksmart
WYALAN Rating: 5/5

A modern classic and a quintessential 90s rom-com, this film reimagines Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew in a high school setting. It stars a young Julia Stiles as the “shrew” and an irresistibly charming Heath Ledger as the rebel hired to woo her. With a killer soundtrack and a cast full of stars like Joseph Gordon-Levitt, this movie is pure, unadulterated fun. It’s a sweet, smart, and genuinely funny film that avoids tired clichés and delivers one of cinema’s most iconic serenades.

Tim’s Take: One of my favourite rom-coms of all time, 10 Things I Hate About You has several brilliant character arcs which I think sets it apart from other rom-coms.

Rye Lane

Tagline: Two heartbroken Londoners meet by chance and wander the city – sharing stories, secrets, and maybe something more.
For Fans of: Before Sunrise, When Harry Met Sally…, Blue Jay, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The Big Sick
WYALAN Rating: 4.5/5

Tired of the same old rom-coms? This one is a vibrant, colourful, and utterly charming love story set over a single day in South London. It follows two recent exes, Yas and Dom, who meet at a friend’s art show and spend the day bonding over their mutual heartbreaks. Directed by Raine Allen-Miller in her feature debut, the film zips along with kinetic energy, playful humour, and a soundtrack that will make you want to dance. It’s a fresh take on the genre, proving that a chance encounter can be the start of something beautiful.

Tim’s Take: One of the better rom-coms to have been released in the last few years and flew under the radar in my opinion. It’s as good as any Richard Curtis rom-com. The leads are instantly likable making this one to add to your list of feel good movies.

Fire Island

Tagline: A group of friends descend on a gay paradise for sun, sass, and scandal—where love and identity collide in a modern Pride & Prejudice.
For Fans of: Bros, The Broken Hearts Gallery, Set It Up, Red, White & Royal Blue, Love, Simon
WYALAN Rating: 4/5

Inspired by Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, this queer rom-com follows a group of diverse friends on their annual summer vacation to the iconic gay destination. Starring Joel Kim Booster and Bowen Yang, the movie is a refreshing and hilarious celebration of chosen family and friendships, with all the witty banter and complicated relationships of the classic novel. Directed by Andrew Ahn, the film is a clever adaptation that manages to feel both timeless and incredibly modern.

Tim’s Take: Another rom-com which I think flew under the radar and deserves more recognition. The inspired remake of Pride and Prejudice is done incredibly well, pushing the story into the present day and all the trials and tribulations dating brings.

Office Space

Tagline: Cubicles, coffee, and quiet desperation—until one man decides to stop playing by the rules and start smashing printers.
For Fans of: The Office, Silicon Valley, Idiocracy, Tropic Thunder, Horrible Bosses
WYALAN Rating: 4/5

Do you hate your job? Then this movie is for you. From the mind of Mike Judge (the creator of Beavis and Butt-Head and King of the Hill), this cynical but hilarious workplace comedy follows a team of disgruntled software programmers in their fight against corporate misery. Filled with unforgettable characters and instantly quotable lines, this movie has become a cult classic for anyone who has ever stared blankly into a cubicle wall. It’s the perfect antidote to the 9-to-5 grind.

Tim’s Take: Weirdly, I watched the first 20 minutes and turned it off. It just didn’t grab me and I wondered why Office Space was considered a cult classic. I decided to watch it again several years later. I was wrong. I think the movie gets a lot better past those 20 minutes as the story picks up.

Super Troopers

Tagline: They’re the law enforcement nobody asked for—armed with pranks, mustaches, and a total disregard for protocol.
For Fans of: Superbad, Pineapple Express, Superbad, Superbad, Beerfest, Half Baked
WYALAN Rating: 4/5

The law is a lot funnier when it’s enforced by the Broken Lizard comedy troupe, who wrote, directed, and starred in this cult classic. Set in rural Vermont, the film follows a group of hilariously unprofessional state troopers who spend more time pranking each other and unsuspecting motorists than they do fighting crime. When their station is threatened with closure, they finally have to take their jobs seriously for a major bust. The film is a pure, unadulterated dose of goofy, stoner humour that has cemented its place in comedy history.

Tim’s Take: Some scenes probably wouldn’t be made today, but it is in full spirit of the comedies being released in the early 2000s like Anchorman and American Pie. It was odd seeing Brian Cox in a comedic role and film such as this. If you enjoyed Reno 911, you’ll probably enjoy Super Troopers.

Hot Shots! Part Deux

Tagline: The sequel that takes war movies, throws in absurdity, and cranks the explosions to eleven—because logic is optional.
For Fans of: Airplane!, The Naked Gun, Spaceballs, Top Secret!, Loaded Weapon 1
WYALAN Rating: 3.5/5

If you thought action movies couldn’t get any dumber, think again. This brilliant parody of 80s and 90s action flicks, most notably Rambo, follows a retired Topper Harley (Charlie Sheen) who is pulled back into the CIA for one last mission. From the mind of director Jim Abrahams (who also co-wrote Airplane! and The Naked Gun), the movie is a relentless barrage of sight gags, one-liners, and incredibly specific pop culture references. It’s so fast-paced and absurd you’ll have to watch it twice just to catch all the jokes.

Tim’s Take: After the success of Airplane! and The Naked Gun came Hot Shots! Part Deux. Not as funny as the previous two in my opinion, but still has the same silly parody humour. If you enjoyed either of those movies, you’ll probably enjoy Hot Shots! Part Deux.

Dave

Tagline: He’s a neurotic rapper with big dreams and even bigger insecurities—trying to convince the world (and himself) that he’s the next big thing.
For Fans of: Atlanta, Master of None, Louie, Curb Your Enthusiasm, BoJack Horseman
WYALAN Rating: 3/5

What if a neurotic, suburban white guy decided he was destined to be one of the greatest rappers of all time? That’s the premise of this show, created by and starring rapper Dave Burd (aka Lil Dicky), which blurs the lines between reality and fiction. The series chronicles his often awkward, sometimes triumphant, and always cringeworthy journey to rap stardom. Known for its mix of hilarious raps, raw emotional honesty, and unexpected celebrity cameos, Dave is a singular comedy that’s as cringe-inducingly funny as it is deeply human.

Tim’s Take: I feel like Dave maybe ran on for a little too long, but the first couple of seasons are worth watching. If you enjoyed Flight of the Conchords, you might like Dave.

The Zone: Survival Mission

Tagline: Trapped in simulated disasters, celebrities must survive chaos, confusion, and each other—with laughter as their only lifeline.
For Fans of: Running Man, The Daring Greatly, Busted!, New World, Great Escape
WYALAN Rating: 4/5

The Zone: Survival Mission (2022-present) Think of this as a cross between a game show and a variety show, where three comedic hosts are dropped into a virtual “zone” and must survive a series of increasingly ridiculous scenarios. Hosted by Korean stars Yoo Jae-suk, Lee Kwang-soo, and Kwon Yu-ri, each episode is a different disaster simulation – from a zombie apocalypse to a haunted house – that the cast must endure for four hours. The real comedy comes from the hosts’ genuine terror and quick-witted banter as they fail spectacularly. It’s a great watch for fans of Korean reality TV or anyone looking for a unique, laugh-out-loud binge.

Tim’s Take: Probably the most underrated pick on the list due to it being in Korean with English subtitles, but I think it’s worth watching. It’s a little like Taskmaster, a little like an escape room and is at its best when the team panic or face a scary situation. If you like Busted on Netflix, you’ll like The Zone. Warning, watching the show will make you hungry (you’ll understand when you watch).

High Fidelity

Tagline: A record store owner revisits his top five heartbreaks – cataloguing love, loss, and the soundtracks that defined them
For Fans of: (500) Days of Summer, Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist, Garden State, Almost Famous, High Fidelity (TV Show)
WYALAN Rating: 5/5

This film is a love letter to music nerds everywhere. Meet Rob Gordon, a record store owner who runs his life by top-five lists, from “Top Five Jobs” to “Top Five All-Time Breakups.” This romantic comedy-drama is a hilarious and introspective look at a man trying to figure out why his relationships keep failing. With a razor-sharp script and a killer soundtrack, it captures the neurotic, self-sabotaging nature of love. Directed by Stephen Frears (known for The Queen and Dangerous Liaisons), it’s a funny, relatable, and deeply charming film.

Tim’s Take: Another of my favourite rom-coms of all time on the list, High Fidelity takes an introspective look at relationships, breakups and memory that is all probably too familiar.

See How They Run

Tagline: In 1950s London, a murder at a stage play sets off a whodunit full of eccentric suspects, theatrical twists, and vintage intrigue.
For Fans of: Knives Out, Glass Onion, Murder on the Orient Express, Clue, The Grand Budapest Hotel
WYALAN Rating: 4/5

A whodunit, a Hollywood satire, and a love letter to the theater all in one. This murder-mystery comedy-of-errors follows a world-weary inspector (Sam Rockwell) and an over-eager rookie constable (Saoirse Ronan) as they investigate a murder in London’s West End in the 1950s. Every character is a delightfully suspicious stereotype, and the film is a blast of wit, style, and playful self-awareness. It’s a fun ride for anyone who enjoys clever dialogue and a good puzzle.

Tim’s Take: I know what you’re thinking, another murder mystery. You can definitely make space for just one more as Rockwell and Ronan are a buddy cop duo you didn’t know you needed. Rockwell plays his usual dour self as a detective while Ronan provides comedic relief in the form of naivety as a rookie constable. There’s also a lot more to this than just the murder mystery which also sets it above the standard genre releases.

Isle of Dogs

Tagline: In a dystopian Japan, a boy searches for his lost dog on an island of exiled canines—uncovering loyalty, rebellion, and unexpected friendship.
For Fans of: Fantastic Mr. Fox, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Kubo and the Two Strings, The Royal Tenenbaums, Coraline
WYALAN Rating: 4/5

A dystopian future where all dogs have been banished to a garbage-filled island. This is a story about a young boy’s journey to find his dog, Spots, and save the canine species. With its stunning stop-motion animation, meticulous detail, and a star-studded cast (Bill Murray, Bryan Cranston, Edward Norton, and more), this is a signature Wes Anderson (director of The Grand Budapest Hotel and Fantastic Mr. Fox) film. It’s a whimsical adventure with a dry sense of humour and a lot of heart.

Tim’s Take: Despite there being three Wes Anderson films on this list, I’m actually not the biggest fan of his films. I appreciate his style, aesthetics and framing of shots, but I think most of his storylines are only okay. For me, the problem is every movie is just a bunch of weird characters doing weird thing which I find repetitive. When you’ve seen one, you’ve kind of seen all his movies. But it’s different when it’s dogs of course as it is in Isle of Dogs.

A Real Pain

Tagline: Two cousins reunite for a trip through Eastern Europe to honour their late grandmother—grappling with grief, memory, and the absurdity of healing.
For Fans of: Manchester by the Sea, The Squid and the Whale, A Serious Man, You Can Count On Me, The Savages
WYALAN Rating: 4/5

You may know Jesse Eisenberg as an actor, but he also wrote, directed, and starred in this darkly comic film about two estranged cousins traveling to Poland to tour their grandmother’s homeland. A quiet drama about trauma turns into a witty, poignant road trip as the two clash over their differences. Kieran Culkin gives an incredible performance as the freewheeling, painfully honest cousin that earned him a Golden Globe and Critics’ Choice Award for Best Supporting Actor. The film is both a serious exploration of history and a brilliantly funny look at a complicated family dynamic.

Tim’s Take: Despite the seriousness of the storyline, A Real Pain expertly weaves funny thoughts and opinions throughout the journey. Culkin somehow remains endearing and likable, even drawing sympathy.

Only Murders in the Building

Tagline: Three true-crime obsessives turn amateur sleuths when a murder hits close to home—proving that solving a mystery is easier than surviving your neighbours.
For Fans of: Knives Out, Search Party, The Afterparty, Psych, Poker Face
WYALAN Rating: 4/5

What do a washed-up actor, a struggling theater director, and a jaded young woman have in common? They all live in the same swanky apartment building and they’re all obsessed with true-crime podcasts. When a murder happens in their own home, they team up to solve the case and start a podcast of their own. Created by Steve Martin (star of The Jerk and Planes, Trains and Automobiles) and John Hoffman, this series is a pitch-perfect blend of classic whodunit and modern humor. The show’s cast won a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series.

Tim’s Take: Martin, Short and Gomez is an odd dynamic on paper at first glance, but they perfectly bounce off each as a trio. It’s also one of the best written murder mysteries, four seasons later and I’ve yet to guess the correct killer. If Ocean’s Eleven was a murder mystery, it might look something like Only Murders in the Building. Although it’s much more than just a murder mystery I would argue, there is a lot of heartfelt character development throughout for all three.

Date Night

Tagline: A suburban couple’s attempt to spice up their marriage turns into a chaotic night of mistaken identity, mobsters, and marital revelations.
For Fans of: The Heat, Game Night, The Proposal, Horrible Bosses, We’re the Millers
WYALAN Rating: 4/5

Suburban couple Phil (Steve Carell) and Claire (Tina Fey) are in a rut. To spice things up, they decide to have a “date night” at a fancy New York restaurant, but a case of mistaken identity leads to a chaotic adventure involving mobsters, car chases, and a crazy amount of running. Directed by Shawn Levy (who also helmed Night at the Museum and Free Guy), this film is a hilarious joyride driven by the incredible comedic chemistry between its two lead stars.

Tim’s Take: I’m not sure I need to say much more than Steve Carell and Tina Fey to be honest. An incredible comedy duo on paper and unsurprisingly on screen, together with the fraught action plotline, Date Night was always going to be a sure fire hit.

Juno

Tagline: She’s smart, sarcastic, and unexpectedly pregnant—but navigating teenhood and motherhood with wit, wisdom, and a killer soundtrack.
For Fans of: Lady Bird, The Edge of Seventeen, Little Miss Sunshine, Booksmart, 50/50
WYALAN Rating: 4/5

A sharp-witted high schooler with a penchant for clever one-liners finds herself pregnant after a fling with her best friend. Instead of panicking, she decides to find the perfect adoptive parents for her baby. This film, written by Diablo Cody, is a funny, heartwarming, and refreshingly honest look at a teenager’s journey through an unexpected pregnancy. Directed by Jason Reitman (known for Up in the Air and Ghostbusters: Afterlife), the film won an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay.

Tim’s Take: While there are a lot of coming-of-age movies involving pregnancy, I think Juno tops the lot. Awkward, funny and sad in small parts, it’s a sweet and easy feel-good watch.

Extraordinary

Tagline: In a world where everyone has superpowers by age 18, one woman is still waiting for hers—and learning that being ordinary might be the most extraordinary thing of all.
For Fans of: Misfits, The Umbrella Academy, Killing Eve, The Good Place, Dead to Me
WYALAN Rating: 4/5

In a world where everyone over the age of 18 gets a superpower, 25-year-old Jen is still waiting for hers. This British comedy follows her frustrating journey as she navigates a world filled with superhumans, all while trying to find her own place and purpose. From creator Emma Moran, this series is a hilarious and surprisingly relatable take on the superhero genre that proves having a power doesn’t make you powerful. It won a Broadcast Digital Award for Best Comedy Programme and earned three BAFTA nominations.

Tim’s Take: For people who are tired of Marvel movies, Extraordinary flips the script. Aside from the powers, there are several great character developments which will provide happiness and sadness in equal parts – including Jizzlord. A very impressive debut from Moran and I look forward to future projects.

The Banshees of Inisherin

Tagline: On a remote Irish island, a lifelong friendship abruptly ends—unraveling into dark comedy, existential dread, and haunting beauty.
For Fans of: In Bruges, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, A Ghost Story, Fargo, No Country for Old Men
WYALAN Rating: 3.5/5

What happens when a man simply decides he doesn’t want to be friends with you anymore? That’s the premise of this dark tragicomedy, where a simple farmer (Colin Farrell) is baffled when his best friend (Brendan Gleeson) suddenly cuts him off. From director Martin McDonagh (who also made In Bruges and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri), the film is a hilariously bleak and profound meditation on male friendships. It won multiple Golden Globes, including Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy and Best Actor for Colin Farrell.

Tim’s Take: I love In Bruges, so The Banshees of Inisherin had big boots to fill. While I didn’t enjoy The Banshees of Inisherin as much as In Bruges, I do wonder if I critiqued the former too harshly, setting the bar too high. Maybe a second watch will improve its score, but I just found both characters to be unlikeable.

Interior Chinatown

Tagline: He’s stuck playing background roles in a Hollywood system that won’t see him—until he starts rewriting his own story from the inside out.
For Fans of: Community, Arrested Development, The Truman Show, Severance, Get Out
WYALAN Rating: 3/5

Based on the National Book Award-winning novel by Charles Yu, this series is a genre-bending police procedural told from the perspective of Willis Wu, a background actor in a TV show called Interior Chinatown. When he stumbles upon a real-life crime, he’s thrown into the spotlight and must solve the case. With a unique blend of surreal humour and sharp social commentary, the show breaks the fourth wall and plays with sitcom tropes to hilarious effect.

Tim’s Take: A very strong start to the series, I felt there were too many episodes in the end unfortunately. It’s still worth a watch in my opinion for the creative storyline.

Wedding Season

Tagline: He crashed her wedding. Hours later, her in-laws were dead. Now they’re on the run—and maybe in love.
For Fans of: The Flight Attendant, The Undoing, Bodyguard, Hanna, Killing Eve
WYALAN Rating: 3/5

In this action-comedy-romance, a charismatic bride’s wedding ends in tragedy when her new husband and his family are all poisoned. The police suspect her secret lover Stefan, who thinks she’s the killer. A frantic, cross-country chase ensues as the two try to clear their names while falling for each other. It’s a frantic and funny British series that combines all the thrills of a chase with the heart of a romantic comedy.

Tim’s Take: I initially watched this as I like the comedy group Drea is a part of, Dreamguns. I think Wedding Season deserves a little more recognition, it’s a very decent fugitive story that feels fairly unique.

The Grand Budapest Hotel

Tagline: A legendary concierge and his protégé navigate murder, theft, and war in a pastel-tinted world of elegance and eccentricity.
For Fans of: The Royal Tenenbaums, Moonrise Kingdom, Rushmore, Amélie, Singin’ in the Rain
WYALAN Rating: 3.5/5

Check into the Grand Budapest Hotel, an opulent resort in a fictional European country on the verge of war. A legendary concierge, Monsieur Gustave (Ralph Fiennes), takes a young lobby boy named Zero under his wing, only for their lives to be turned upside down when a priceless painting goes missing. This is a visual feast and a comedy masterpiece from director Wes Anderson (known for Moonrise Kingdom and The Royal Tenenbaums). The film won four Academy Awards, including Best Production Design and Best Original Score.

500 Days of Summer

Tagline: Boy meets girl. Girl doesn’t believe in love. What follows is a nonlinear journey through heartbreak, hope, and the messy truth of relationships.
For Fans of: High Fidelity, Annie Hall, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The Spectacular Now, Blue Valentine
WYALAN Rating: 5/5

This isn’t a love story. This is a story about love, told over 500 days, but not in chronological order. We follow Tom (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), a hopeless romantic who falls for Summer (Zooey Deschanel), a cynical new girl at his office. This romantic comedy-drama is a smart, funny, and surprisingly honest look at what happens when your idealized expectations of a relationship don’t align with reality. The film won an Independent Spirit Award for Best Screenplay and was directed by Marc Webb (known for The Amazing Spider-Man).

Tim’s Take: As I’ve mentioned, 500 Days of Summer is one of my favourite rom-coms of all time. I think it perfectly journeys the highs and lows of relationships and questions hopes and infatuation vs compatibility and reality. If you liked La La Land, you might like 500 Days of Summer.

Theatre Camp

Tagline: When the founder of a scrappy theatre camp falls ill, the misfit staff must rally to save the summer—armed with jazz hands and pure chaos.
For Fans of: Waiting for Guffman, Best in Show, Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping, Wet Hot American Summer, Camp
WYALAN Rating: 3/5

When the beloved founder of a scrappy theater camp falls into a coma, her “bro-y” crypto-investor son must take over and save the camp from foreclosure. This mockumentary-style comedy, directed by Molly Gordon and Nick Lieberman (who also wrote and starred in the film), is a pitch-perfect satire of the theatrical world. Filled with eccentric counsellors and a cast of talented kids, it’s a hilarious and surprisingly heartwarming look at a group of misfits who find their community.

Tim’s Take: I was a little disappointed in Theatre Camp due to the impressive cast. I would say Theatre Camp is a gentle watch at least.
